If you’ve been living for any considerable length of time, it is pretty common knowledge that sinkholes are no joke. Especially our friends that live near the Hershey/Palmyra area, they know sinkholes all too well. There’s even a restaurant in Palmyra called the Sinkhole Saloon! A little lesson in geology for you….sinkholes form when the bedrock of earth is slowly worn away by erosion. They are particularly common in places that have a higher concentration of limestone because it is so susceptible to that erosion.
What may NOT be common knowledge is that coverage for damage to your home caused by a sinkhole may not be automatically provided under your homeowner’s policy. Yes, that’s right. Sinkhole damage may NOT be covered.
It depends on what insurance company you are with, but typically you have to opt in on that coverage. If you’ve ever purchased homeowner’s insurance through our agency, we would have offered this coverage to you. While sinkholes don’t happen every day, if/when they do happen, if it damages your home, it can be devastating to your foundation or the entire structure itself. Unsure if you have this protection? Curious as to how much it costs?
