Most of us can recall learning how to drive and how intense it was back when we started. There are so many things to remember about just operating the car…how to merge, checking your blind spot, parallel parking…simply put, DON’T WRECK! Unfortunately, most of the school districts in our area only provide the classroom instruction. Behind-the-wheel driver training is essential in our opinion. It gives the new driver real training with an expert by their side. It’s worth the extra expense AND it gives you extra money off of your car insurance when it does come time to add them to your policy.
In addition, what the classroom AND the behind-the-wheel training doesn’t teach your teen can cost you. It’s very common for friends who don’t have their own car, or ::gasp:: don’t even have their license yet, to ask to drive your teen’s car. As soon as your kid lends your car to them, they are lending your insurance to them also. Insurance follows the car, NOT the driver. And if that friend is in an accident, God forbid, guess who’s on the hook? You and your insurance company. Yikes!
Do yourself a favor and set an unbreakable rule for your teen – don’t lend your car to anyone, no matter what!
